Letter sent by Major A P Phyle , Commissioner of Pegu District in Burma to the Foreign Department in India. "
Fort William
Rangoon
16th April, 1859 Sir,
In acknowledging the receipt of Mr. Under Secretary Simon’s letter No. 1220 of 23rd March last, I have the honour to state that owing to the exigency of the moment the ex-king of Dehli and other State Prisoners were located partly in tents and parly in a portion of the main guard which was partitioned off. As there was no convenient residence available for them and in anticipation of their being detained here some time, estimates were prepared and building commenced upon as soon as circumstances would admit; it is now all but completed and in a few days the State Prisoners will be removed from their present quarters. Their new residence is built of teak and will be raised off the ground with a substantial palisade round it. " |
