Bahadur Shah Zafar
    The Metcalfe Album

The Metcalfe Album belongs to the British Library and was until October 2003 , on display at the Library.  The Album contain verses penned by Bahadur Shah himself.  This Persian verse was presented to Metcalfe on 29th April 1844.  It should be noted that apart from being a very exceptional poet, Bahadur Shah Zafar was well known for his skills in Calligraphy.

Metcalfe translated the verse as follows:

A Friend is he, who preoffers Friendship's hand

When Care or grief our kindred feelings claim

Not he whom prosperous days alone command

And is a Friend or Brother but in name.
