Bahadur Shah Zafar
    State Cap

Below is a picture of what the Birmingham Museum described as the Indian State Cap.   This cap was recently exhibited at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Chamberlain Square, Birmingham, B3 3DH.  Ms. Gurminder Kenth arranged for the Display of this very significant piece.  The description given to this cap by the museum is as follows :

"    Indian State Cap,  Gold wire embroidery, feather, rubies, pearls, and emeralds on velvet fabric.

This State Cap is reputed to have belonged to the last Mughal King of Delhi, Bahadur Shah Zafar, II (1775-1862)  who was a descendant of the Mughal Dynasty.  King Zafar succeeded to the throne of Delhi in 1837 but was imprisoned by the British after the 1857 revolution.  The cap was presented to the Museum in 1898 and was recently rediscovered through the mapping project.  Presented to the Museum by Mr. G A Meakin in 1898 following loan in 1885.   The miniature portrait of BSZ II (1775-1862) is shown here wearing a similar cap.    "

No indication is given as to how the cap came into the possession of Mr. Meakin.
